Whiting - Pierogi Fest
THE WHITING PIEROGI FEST is presented by the Whiting Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce. Drawing over a quarter million visitors each year, the Festival is the pride of Whiting. It allows us to celebrate our heritage while poking a little fun at ourselves at the same time. Where else can you see grown women dressed up like our grandmothers (bushas, as we say) in housecoats and babushkas? Or the lawnmower brigade strut through town with sandals and socks on like or dads did? You’ll also see life-size polish pastries and goodies walking and talking waiting to take a picture with you. Only here at Whiting’s Pierogi Fest. Welcome!
ABOUT THE FEST
THE FIRST PIEROGI FEST came about differently depending on whose story you listen to. Some say it started when a group of friends met for breakfast on morning and the conversation turned to their ethnic heritage, what so many of us in our Whiting community had in common in the way of family memories and events.
It was decided that it would be a real honor to their grandparents to celebrate and retain part of that special heritage. All they needed was a symbol to pin it on. That symbol was the innocent and darling little Eastern European darling, the pierogi (or pirohi, depending on your grandma). Some people still trill the R when they say it, just like busha and jaja did.
Listen to Mr. Pierogi tell the story and it starts a little differently. I’ve had a lot of people ask me over the years how I got the gig. I remember it differently than a group of people sitting around reminiscing about their grandmothers. You see, back in the mid 1990’s my wife, the beautiful Mrs. Pierogi left me for Mr. Kielbasa, for what many think are obvious reasons. I was so depressed about the incident that the town of Whiting gathered around to help ease my sorrows. In what some might consider effigy, I burned her likeness, and found that the little buggers were actually quite tasty. The town’s folk had such a good time that they decided to make the party a yearly event.

Buckley Homestead
The historic traditions, culture, and heritage of farming life during the 19th and 20th centuries are re-created on this living history farm, where visitors learn about our local history and can reminisce about their own childhood memories. In 1849 Dennis and Catherin Buckley settled in Northwest Indiana and started their farmstead, certainly not knowing it would be of interest to visitors over one hundred and fifty years into the future. Immigrants from Ireland the Buckley family came to America fleeing the potato famine, and started their farmstead and continued to pass it down through the generations. In 1977, Rose Buckley Pearce, the great-granddaughter of the original Buckley’s donated a portion of the homestead to the Lake County Parks Department so that visitors could experience early farm life through a living history outdoor museum. Later, following her passing, Mrs. Pearce’s estate donated the remaining acres to the park department and to the residents of Lake County. Visitors to Buckley Homestead have plenty to see. The Buckley home remained in the family until it was donated to Lake County, so when you visit the Main House Museum nearly all the furnishings are original to the Buckley family. Across the street from the house is the focal point of the barnyard, the Bank Barn. This tall barn was built tall in 1916 so that it could be filled with loose hay, and now over 100 years old the barn is used for events, and activities at the park. Down the path visitors will find the one room school house, a replica of the original school house which was open from the mid-1800’s until the 1920’s. Continuing on the path from the school is the pioneer farm and log house from the mid-1800’s. Rich with local Indiana history Buckley Homestead is a popular field trip destination for area schools. Additionally, the Lake County Parks Department offers many unique programs at Buckley Homestead throughout the year. The park is home to an annual Fall Fest, and the popular Legend of Sleepy Hollow performances. The new, soon-to-be-favorite, History on Tap breathes new life into the 100-year-old barn with local breweries, and music for an evening of fun. Educational classes and workshops on topics such as basket weaving and sheep shearing are also available throughout the year. Also at Buckley Homestead, about one mile south of the barnyard is the Calumet Astronomy Center which homes both the Thomas Conway Observatory, in association with the Calumet Astronomical Society and the NIRo telescope, a partnership with Purdue University Northwest. Public stargazing events are held here throughout the year.
Admission cost(s) Varied (General Admission September & October from 12-4 is $2 for adults, and $1 for children and seniors. Special events, workshops, and classes have their own prices)

Running Vines Winery
What started out as a casual conversation between two cousins in June of 2014, quickly turned into the launching pad for Running Vines Winery. Running Vines is a family owned winery that provides a variety of wines for the entire palate. The Fit Collection features classic dry light bodied wines and the Race Collection features sweeter wines.
Our wine enthusiasts will lead you through a tasting of wines where you are sure to find the wine that best fits your style and palate. We recommend a tasting of six wines of your choice. Once you find the right wines for you, you can enjoy a glass with us or take home a bottle or two to enjoy with friends and family.
Since we are a farm winery, we make our own wines and we are child friendly. All ages are welcome to come to the tasting room. We offer live music on every Saturday night during the summer months. Running Vines is an integral part of the community and hosts a variety of fitness and fun runs for the community. If you look on our website or Facebook events you are sure to find a game night or painting party that should be paired with wine!
The cousins, Nicki and Walt, feel strongly about giving back to the community whenever possible, so like a vine and it’s branches, Running Vines is intertwined in the local community, giving back to local causes and charities.

Bark in the Park
This family fun event will have you howling with laughter as the pets play games, lap up treats, beg for gifts, and whine to be in contests. Bring your 4 legged friend in costume for best dress contest, try his paws at paw-casso, dive for ducks – or in many cases just lay in the pool. Great prizes provided by area businesses will be awarded to the best pet trick. Does your fury friend look like you – well there is a contest for that too. You think you can out bark you dog – well give it a try and you too will have a chance to win.
Vendors will line the park representing pet shelters, rescue groups, pup boutiques, food for your pet’s people will be available and the kids will have a chance to play numerous games.
This is something that truly creates a lot of bark in our Thomas Centennial Park.

Broadway Block Party
Chelle’s started Ladies’ Night as a third Thursday event for ladies to have an evening of shopping with different vendors and artisans, let loose a little with fun and laughter and do some tasting and sipping. Now with the weather nicer the event has traveled to the streets – or let’s just say sidewalks and other businesses have joined the fun and opened their doors. The guys felt left out – so Ladies Night did not fit the bill, thus name change to Broadway Block Party.
This third Thursday event is only 5p-8p but it is packed with Villa Nova selling pizza by the slice, Hot Diggity Dawg brewing up her awesome hotdogs and vendors out on sidewalks and inside shops. You may be in for special treat if a musician stops in to play at Green Garage – June’s music is by Johnny V.
Vendors have included LuLaRoe, Roden + Fields, Plunder Vingage Jewelry, doTERRA Essential Oils, Scentsy, Norwex, WeeBee Artists, Perfectly Posh, Henna by GiGi, Pampered Chef, and more. New vendors join monthly.
This is just a flat out enjoyable event, so come join the fun the third Thursday on Broadway in downtown Chesterton.

ROCK THE HOUSE – An All Day Music Fest
Saturday August 5, 2017
Outdoor Stage, games, food – 12:00pm – 7:00pm – Free Admission – All Ages Welcome
Local H – 8:00PM – 12:00AM – $25.00 Admission – Over 21
Local H is known for their blistering live shows and for pioneering the two-man band set-up — frontman Scott Lucas covers both guitar and bass through an extra pick up in his guitar and drummer Ryan Harding pounds out the rest of the sound. While they have earned praise in the past for their catalog of clever concept albums, Local H have forgone a singular theme on their most recent album — Hey, Killer (out April 2015 on G&P Records) — turning out a non-stop blast of straight-up, hooky, guitar-heavy rock songs — each one catchier than the last. Local H’s widely praised 1998 concept album Pack Up the Cats earned a spot in SPIN magazine’s top 20 albums of that year. The band was named “Chicagoans of the Year” by the Chicago Tribune for their 2008 break-up album, 12 Angry Months, more than a decade after their breakthrough hit “Bound for the Floor” ruled the Modern Rock charts. In 2015, Local H celebrated the 25th anniversary of their first show and released a career-spanning coffee table book, Local H: Twenty-Five Years of Skin In The Game. Earlier this year, they re-issued their 1996 album, As Good As Dead, on vinyl for the first time.
Memorial Opera House is back at it with Rock the House 4 founded by our very own Stretch Miller. All proceeds benefit the operations of the Memorial Opera House. Join us for a fun day of music for all ages! Featuring local artists on our outside stage. Bring the kids for games and a bite to eat. The evening’s headliner will feature Local H, a heavy, rockin’ band you don’t want to miss!

At first the Sycamores seem mad, but it is not long before we realize that if t hey are mad, the rest of the world is madder. Tony, attractive young son of the Kirbys, falls in love with Alice Sycamore and brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore home on the wrong evening. The shock sustained by the Kirbys, who are invited to eat cheap food, shows Alice that marriage with Tony is out of the question. Meantime, Tony, who knows the Sycamores are right and his own people wrong, will not give her up. No mention has as yet been made of the strange activities of certain members of the household engaged in the manufacture of fireworks; nor of the printing press set up in the parlor; nor of Grandpa’s interview with the tax collector when he tells him he doesn’t believe in the income tax.
